This Route & Destination Guide from Malaysian Airways printed by the Straits Times Press includes a colourful illustrated map showing Singapore as one of the key flight hubs on one side, and descriptions of the airlines’ key Southeast Asian destinations on the other. There are also illustrations of various aspects of regional culture and nature on the map. Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) was established in 1937 and started commercial flights in 1947 between Singapore and Penang. The airline underwent several name changes, becoming Malaysian Airways Limited in November 1963 with the formation of Malaysia, then Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) in May 1966 after Singapore’s independence. Subsequently in 1971, MSA split into two separate entities, Malaysian Airline System (MAS or Malaysia Airlines) and Singapore Airlines (SIA).This Route & Destination Guide captures a snapshot of the airlines’ activities just prior to Singapore’s independence. It also demonstrates the importance of Singapore as both flight hub and travel destination.
