This is a prototype of Telecoms Postpac envelopes (in two sizes) produced by Hengdesign Associates. Introduced by Singapore post offices in 1986, Postpac envelopes featured an inner lining of plastic bubble padding that cushions and protects delicate contents during transit. They offered customers looking to send small, fragile items through the mail, a practical and accessible packaging option. Made from thick, high-grammage kraft paper in a deep yellow tone, the envelopes were designed for added strength and durability. A red triangle with the word "Postpac" is emblazoned prominently in the top left corner, ensuring visibility and signalling that the contents are fragile. Radiating red lines at the triangle's edges add a sense of dynamism and modernity to the design. This product reflects the growing sophistication of the mail processing system of Telecoms following its 1982 merger with the Postal Services Department. Physical mail was a vital channel for corporate and personal communication, as email had not yet become mainstream. By the late 1980s, Telecoms was handling an estimated one million mail items daily, prompting a shift toward automation and computerisation to manage the growing volume efficiently.Hengdesign Associates, helmed by U.S.-trained principal designer James Heng, had been commissioned to oversee Telecoms' logo redesign at a pivotal moment when the statutory board was preparing to introduce more advanced and futuristic telecommunications services in the 1980s. It also created a refreshed corporate identity for the agency, which was adapted to its business forms, signs, and stationery, and corporate vehicles, projecting a unified presence across multiple touchpoints.
