The Toa Payoh MRT station was opened on 7 November 1987. This photograph was taken on 14 November 1987 and shows a family seating on the MRT train. Within a month, 1.37 million trips, with a daily average of 45,600 trips, had been made between Toa Payoh and Yio Chu Kang. At this point, the network only consisted of 5 stations: Toa Payoh, Braddell, Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, and Yio Chu Kang. By July 1990, 42 stations would be open with the MRT system reaching Boon Lay, Choa Chu Kang, Yishun, and Pasir Ris.
