Construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system began in 1982 following a decade of study and research. The first MRT system plan envisioned 42 stations and 3 lines, the North-South Line, East-West Line, and Branch Line. The first section of the MRT to open was between Toa Payoh and Yio Chu Kang on 7 November 1987.
