Construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system began in 1982 following a decade of study and research. The first MRT system plan envisioned 42 stations and 3 lines, the North-South Line, East-West Line, and the Western Line. The first section of the MRT to open was between Toa Payoh and Yio Chu Kang on 7 November 1987. The system map shown on the top in-train panel shows the system as it existed in 1988 from Lakeside to Yishun.
