Gunny sacks were once a common sight on the streets of Singapore. These sacks were filled with agricultural goods from the Malay Peninsula and the Dutch East Indies and were brought to Singapore to be re-exported to other parts of the world. These sacks were generally made of jute, a type of natural fibre. This needle was used by the donor’s father as part of his work repairing gunny sacks.
