The Seletar village of Kampong Teluk Jawa sits across from Singapore, with the Johor or Tebrau Straits joining them. These Straits and lands have been the ancestral homes of the Orang Seletar community, who live in tandem with the land and sea for their livelihood. In the foreground, a man fishes with a sondong, a type of push net carried between two wooden poles. It is pushed along the sea floor and the catch is then scooped up. Jefree Salim is a photographer from the Orang Seletar village of Kampung Sungai Temon, Johor Bahru. His photographs document the lives of the Orang Seletar and the effects of development and the climate crisis which threaten the traditions practices of the community. As an Orang Seletar community member himself, the photographs taken by Jefree Salim are both an act of resistance against these pressures, as well as a personal act of cultural preservation.
