This is a print out of the 1890 Imperial Rescript on Education that was signed by the Emperor Meiji on October 30, 1890. It was mandated that the document must be distributed to every Japanese school run by the Japanese empire for students to study and memorise. This was done to foster a collective sense of patriotism and ‘Japanese spirit’ amongst students which includes students of Japanese schools that were set up in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation. The contents of the document outline that subjects of the Japanese empire were expected to be filial and loyal to the Japanese emperor.
