This sarong is decorated with flowers grouped together in bouquets, with birds and butterflies darting around them. Variations of such patterns recur in batik from this time and is known as the buketan motif. It was a design popularised by Eurasian batik makers. To meet the demand for such patterns, many Peranakan batik workshops closely adapted their designs to resemble these floral bouquets. Batik sarongs were worn by women in the Straits Settlements and the Dutch East Indies as a skirt to accompany a top known as a kebaya.
