Sunat (also called khatan or khitan) or circumcision is an important rite of passage for young males between the ages of ten to twelve in the broader Malay world, particularly the Muslim-dominant areas, as it marks transition out of childhood. To celebrate the milestone, a processional ceremony would accompany the circumcision: the circumcised boy would be dressed in elaborate costume and paraded around the village atop a pedestal often with a low yet decorative wooden chair, such as this Javanese circumcision chair with lotus carvings and rattan seat. The circumcised boy was also referred to as pengantin sunat, as circumcision also marked his debut to society as a young eligible groom.
