Kua, or Qun kua, are chinese wedding garments that gained popularity in the 1940s. Comprised of a black jacket and red skirt, it is decorated with dragon and pheonix motifs which represent the bride and groom on their wedding day. This kua was purchased ready-made in South Bridge Road, Singapore. It was one of three dresses worn for Mdm Chay Sou Leng's wedding. Mdm Chay wore a white western gown, which she rented, for the morning ceremony. She then donned the kua for the tea ceremony and the start of her wedding banquet. During the banquet, she changed into a red cheongsam.
