This clothes rack is decorated with lacquered and gilded openwork panels. The top rail ends in a dragon head on each side, combined with floral motifs. The row of vertical rods at the base would have been used to store footwear. It once belonged to Sim Som Eng (1896–1983) and Tan Kim Nio (1900–1974), a Peranakan Chinese couple who received it as a wedding gift in Batavia (Jakarta) in 1923. It was customary for a bridal trousseau to include furniture.
