These embroidered heels made by Bata in 1958 were modelled by Leonie Koenitz, who later owned the pair. Koenitz was one of the first fashion models trained in Singapore at Joan Booty and Ruth Warner's Mannequin Training and Charm School, which opened in 1956. Bata was one of the earliest modern shoe sellers in Singapore when it opened in 1931 at the Capitol Building, having expanded in Europe at the start of the 20th century. In 1940, Bata opened the Bata Building on North Bridge Road (the site of the present-day Peninsula Plaza Shopping and Office Complex), which became a prominent landmark in the area. These heels feature embroidered motifs of roses and are fully embellished with beaded detailing. The intricate design of this pair suggests that Bata, a modern shoe brand synonymous with value and comfort even in the midcentury, had an interest in artisanal forms of production that appealed to consumers who had an eye for more ornamental and fashion-forward designs.
