This is a manuscript of the guqin piece Qiao Ge ("Song of the Woodcutter"), transcribed by the renowned 20th-century guqin master Guan Pinghu (1897–1967). The transcription employs the traditional Chinese notation for guqin music, which specifies finger positions and stroke techniques but does not directly indicate note values.Qiao Ge is traditionally attributed to Mao Minzhong, a musician active during the late Song dynasty. According to tradition, Mao composed the piece after witnessing the Mongol conquest of the Southern Song capital, Lin'an, as a call for like-minded individuals to retreat into seclusion. Variations of the transmitted score range from ten to thirteen sections.Guan Pinghu, born in Beijing with ancestral roots in Suzhou, was a celebrated guqin master and painter who founded the "Guan School" of guqin music. Trained by his father and later by other masters, Guan synthesized various regional styles into his unique approach. His renown grew through performances on radio and teaching at institutions like the Central Conservatory of Music. Beyond his performances, Guan dedicated his life to reviving and preserving lost guqin compositions.
