The game of chaupar (also known as pachisi, chausar or chaupat) is one of the oldest games of the Indian subcontinent. It was a popular game played both by the common people and royalty alike. References to pachisi/chaupar are found in Indian literature, in various paintings and artistic depictions from ancient times to the 20th century, as well as in Indian architecture. Boards such as these would have been made for everyday use. The board has a pocket under the centre square where the dice and playing pieces would be stored, while the rest of the board could be conveniently folded and tied for storage or travel.
