The game of chaupar (also known as pachisi, chausar or chaupat) is one of the oldest games of the Indian subcontinent. It was a popular game played both by the common people and royalty alike. References to pachisi/chaupar are found in Indian literature, in various paintings and artistic depictions from ancient times to the 20th century, as well as in Indian architecture. This miniature board, measuring only 9cm in width, would have been made as a ritual game likely for the worship of Krishna. It is common practice to create miniature versions of toys and games for deities in Hinduism, as part of the practices associated with their worship. The popularity of pachisi as an everyday game would have led to the creation of this miniature version for the god’s amusement as well.
