The game of chaupar (also known as pachisi, chausar or chaupat) is one of the oldest games of the Indian subcontinent. It was a popular game played both by the common people and royalty alike. References to pachisi/chaupar are found in Indian literature, in various paintings and artistic depictions from ancient times to the 20th century, as well as in Indian architecture. Boards such as this would have been made for more affluent patrons, as evident in the materials used. The small size of this board suggests that it would have been made for ritual and display rather than play.
