Bordered by flowers, the central field of the bolster cover is composed of peonies and pairs of squirrels, deer, and birds, possibly phoenixes and peacocks. Birds and flowers were often paired in embroideries made by or to the taste of Peranakans. Squirrels and deer symbolise longevity. The motifs were embroidered with delicate knot stitches and couched gold thread. Bolster covers are part of a wide array of embroidered and beaded textiles used to decorate the wedding bed. Great care is taken to dress the wedding bed, as this is where new generations of the family begin.
