Online Label Text: This is a pending or belt buckle, a commonly worn jewelled ornament in the Malay world, worn both by men and women as functional as they held the sarong in place, an amulet, and a status symbol all at once. Gold and bejewelled pending were also part of royal regalia. This pending is in the bujur berhujung pepat or square-edged oval or eye-shaped design. It is chased and etched with scrolling floral and lotus or bunga teratai motifs. The inner frame is raised and shaped like a lotus. Small white stones are set in the gold to form an outer border. Medium-sized white stones are scattered across the rest of the pending to enhance the floral etchings. Ten small diamonds alternating with gold beads are set in a circle to form the core of the lotus. Some traces of the characteristic chemical red stain, applied to gold jewellery, particularly in the Malay world, remain. Prov./Authen.: This pending was in the collection of MHF even before NHB signed an MOU with MHF. Based on information provided by MHF, both pending come from the collection of the family of Sultan Hussein Shah.MHF acquired them from a pawn shop based on Tengku Shawal’s advice.
