This photograph depicts the opening ceremony of Kallang Airport on 12 June 1937, with Balaguru Govindasamy Chettiar seated with the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Shenton Thomas. The Kallang Airport was Singapore’s first commercial international airport building.Balaguru Govindasamy was a pioneer Singaporean who ran the Indian Labour Company, the main contractor supplying workers to the Singapore Harbour Board (now Port of Singapore Authority (PSA)).
