Nagajuban were worn underneath an outer garment or at home. Only visible to close relatives and friends, they frequently feature bold designs. This example is painted with Shoki, the Buddhist demon queller known as Zhongkui in Chinese. Images of Shoki were auspicious and protective.Details are enhanced with embroidery. Combinations of decorative techniques is a common feature in Japanese textile design.
