Gift of the family of Mr and Mrs Lee Kip Lee

This sarong is decorated with a buketan (bouquet) design, with a bird and butterfly on each side. The kepala (head) features a series of diagonal bands with alternating colours and floral patterns. It is signed “Njo. Oeij Kok Tjiang / P.K.L.” and was likely made by Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing as a gift for her sister-in-law, Nyonya Oeij Kok Tjiang. Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing was the second of three generations from a family of batik makers in Pekalongan. Oeij is the historical Dutch spelling for Oey, a Chinese Indonesian surname of Hokkien origin.
