These brightly coloured hats could have been knitted by the Nyonyas. Knit craft became very popular in Europe and its popularity spread to the Straits Settlements in the early twentieth century. Knitting and crochet were generally included in girls' school curricula and widely taught by missionaries and in schools. Many Nyonyas picked up this craft as a result of such European influence.
