These are caps worn by pageboys in a Peranakan wedding. They are decorated with tassels of faceted beads and a band of beadwork with flora motifs, typically considered auspicious in Chinese culture. The flora motifs convey wishes for good fortune, longevity, a blissful marriage, successful progeny and good health. Most garments worn during a Peranakan wedding were manufactured in China by skilled, professional embroiderers before being shipped to their Straits Chinese customers. The page boy played an important role in the traditional 12-day Peranakan wedding, accompanying the groom in a fantastical procession.
