These large chargers are decorated in the Imari style, with iron-red enamels on underglaze blue. The central panel has a flower vase; the cartouches around the rim are decorated with different landscapes.Imari wares are named after a port on the island of Kyushu, Japan, where they were first shipped from. Large quantities were made for export to Europe in the mid-17th century, shipped by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Chargers like this were used as service plates (with other vessels on top used for food) during special dinners, such as parties or weddings.
