One or Several Tigers (2017) performs a re-reading of Singapore’s history through the figure of tigers and its multiple representations. In many ways, the work harkens back to Ho’s earlier work UTAMA – Every Name in History is I (2003) where Ho addressed the possible misidentification of a tiger in the myth surrounding Sang Nila Utama and his naming of “Singa-pura”. This work focuses on Heinrich Leutemann’s painting (c.1865) of Government-Superintendent G.D. Coleman and his team of land surveyors being attacked by a tiger out in the jungles of Singapore, centered by a strange hypnotic duet between Coleman and the tiger. It represents, for Ho, the possibility of another history and of our own becoming. The work’s resonance with Ho’s earlier piece UTAMA (2003) is obvious in its shared interest towards Singapore’s myth-making and historiography. However, the form of the work represents Ho at a much more developed stage of his artistic practice, through his use of an immersive two-channel video installation, replete with multiple sound channels, and an automated theatricality that has come to characterise the aesthetics of Ho’s more recent works. Indeed, this work represents a formal precedence for many of the works that would follow—e.g. The Mysterious Lai Teck (2018), Hotel Aporia (2019).
