This is a portrait of Datuk Choong Eng Hye (1904 – 1983). He succeeded his father, Datuk Choong Lye Hock’s business and was a rubber dealer. On 21 January 1927, Eng Hye married Ho Guat Im (later Datin Ho Guat Im) (1910 – 1993), the younger daughter of Mr Ho Kim Teik, the founder and chairman of Georgetown Motor Garage Ltd. in Penang. Eng Hye’s paternal grandfather, the Choong family’s patriarch, Choong Cheng Kean, immigrated from China in the 18th century and established the family’s network which spanned Xiamen, Phuket, Kedah, and Penang.
