Such ceramics bowls were commonly found in Peranakan Chinese households. The bowl would be filled with rice and placed on an altar, with joss sticks inserted and placed upright. Two joss sticks are burnt to offer to the ancestors while three are used for deities and gods. On special occasions such as Chinese New Year and death anniversaries of the ancestors, an offering of food and drinks will be served on the altar table and the living will perform rituals to commemorate and venerate the spirits of the deceased. Many Peranakan families have retained their Chinese religious beliefs and practices. This item is donated by the family of late Mr Yeo Cheng Kim and Madam Koh Quee Neo. It comes from the ancestral home, formerly at 22 to 25 Zion Road.
