Bullion threads and metal purl are fine strands of metal that are coiled into tube-like springs. The centre of a bullion thread is hollow and it can be stitched to fabric by passing a thread through it. By juxtaposing threads of varying thickness, twists and light-reflective properties, the Nyonyas created richly textured surfaces. These raised gold bullion threads add glamour and a touch of boldness.
