This is a pack of assorted metallic threads in red, silver and gold. Metallic-wrapped threads are called benang mas or benang emas by the Peranakan Chinese and are made of narrow strips of gilded or silvered paper, wound around a fibre core. The art of Nyonya needlework is embodied in its rainbow hues and play of materials. By juxtaposing threads of varying thickness, twists and light-reflective properties, the Nyonyas created richly textured surfaces.
