The embroidery on this shoulder cloth is known as "kelingkan" or "keringkam" in Malay. This is a form of embroidery where the metallic filaments used are typically flat ribbons to give a beaten metal effect. This selendang was worn by Sharifah Rugayah Aljunied. The Aljunieds are one of the prominent Hadhrami Arab Peranakan families in Singapore and the region. Hailing from Hadhramawt in Yemen, the Aljunieds had established themselves as traders in Palembang first before Syed Omar bin Ali Aljunied (1792-1852) went over to Singapore after the British had set up a trading post in 1819.
