This silver dish with a scalloped rim is decorated with a pair of phoenixes amidst peonies surrounding a central medallion with a single peony blossom. The outer border features the Eight Buddhist Emblems interspersed with peonies. The style of the decoration of this dish closely resembles the design of white-ground porcelain plates made for the Tan Kim Seng family. Silverware is not commonly found in Peranakan households, with porcelain wares preferred for use on festive occasions. Silver plates and dishes belonging to Peranakan families are largely used for ritual purposes such as religious offerings as part of ancestor veneration.
