This long cloth, called pha nung, is worn in Thailand as part of chut thai, or traditional Thai clothing. It is wrapped around the waist, and sometimes pulled through the legs and tucked in the back to form knee-length pants. Dyed using the mordant and resist dyeing technique, the blue centre field of this piece, patterned in a diagonal lattice filled with red floral motifs, is characteristic of cloths made in India and exported to Thailand. This was collected in Thailand by Georges Padoux (1867-1961), French diplomat and Plenipotentiary Minister to Siam (1905-1913) and China (1913-1931).
