Gift of the family of Jaswant Singh Gill
This is a photograph of LTC Jaswant Singh Gill, a Singaporean-Sikh pioneer. Jaswant Singh Gill was the first Chief of the Singapore Navy, after Singapore's independence in 1965. Jaswant Singh Gill arrived in Singapore in 1929 at the age of six. In 1948, he started his career at the Education Department, becoming a primary school teacher, and later a principal. He joined Malayan Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (MRNVR) part-time in 1949 and was the only Sikh and second Asian officer among 100 British officers and 900 sailors.
