This dish was found together with a brown-glazed jar that was exhumed from Bukit Brown Cemetery between 2013 to 2014. It probably served as the lid for a jar that originally contained human skeletal remains. The remains were later cremated after the exhumation of the grave was completed. Such jars appear to have been used for reburials at Bukit Brown Cemetery. The exhumed skeletal remains of people who had previously been buried at other sites, were placed in such jars when they were reburied at Bukit Brown Cemetery. The practice of secondary burials and the use of large jars to contain the skeletal remains also took place in parts of southern China.
