“Long, Long Journey emerged from Chan’s most recent body of work, which utilizes acrylic paint and denim – in the form of second hand jeans – as its mediums of choice. While the choice of medium stems from his observation of the socio-economic realities of contemporary Malaysia, the iconography of the works speak also to Chan’s engagement with art historical motifs as well as his observation of recent political events in Malaysia. The present series departs from Chan’s earlier visual language of the surreal and hybrid. Chan’s painting speaks to a number of themes relevant to Malaysia – the country’s dependence on foreign labour, the recent general elections that marked a sea change in local politics, the proliferation in public transportation (e.g. the new MRT line cutting through KL), and art history (the work of Zulkifli Dahlan)”
