Defining features of a baju shanghai blouse include a mandarin collar, side opening with ornamental fasteners and lace panels. Although this blouse shares these features, it is made from cotton, instead of the heavier fabrics like silk damask, which were more commonly used to make baju shanghais. Sewing machines were available in the Malay Archipelago by the end of the 19th century, and by the first decades of the 20th century they were used to create embroideries that imitated the appearance of lace. This blouse belonged to Tan Touw Nio (1890–1976 ), who would have worn it with a batik sarong.
