This pedestal bowl which was hammered on a silver alloy is said to be produced in Riau, Indonesia. It comprises of a high domed foot, a plain silver stem, and a wide bowl with a crenulated, reinforced rim. The bowl has been decorated all over with foliate scrolls. Interspersed amongst the foliage on both the domed foot and the bowl itself are cartouches filled with figures from wayang kulit, which themselves typically are based on the characters from the Malay-Indonesian version of the Indian epic, the Ramayana, reflecting the lasting influence of the early Hindu period on Malay material culture.
