Ilo Ilarde’s practice has long examined and played with notions of Art’s ontological status; art histor(ies), the means and modes of art production, its presentation, circulation and reception in the artworld. The installation work is intended to mimic and replicate the museum artwork label – in this case, the Singapore Art Museum – such that the painting-installation is itself, its own sign and referent. The work turns and plays upon multiple contradictions: it points to and elevates the ubiquitous artwork label (which identifies an artwork and its creator), and by virtue of containing the same information, Illarde’s painting now makes the label redundant. The use of plywood here gestures to the deep influence of Roberto Chabet, regarded as a pioneering figure in Philippine conceptual art, where the cheap and widely available material was often employed by Chabet in his installation works.Nilo Ilarde (b. 1960, Manila) graduated from University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts with Bachelor in Fine Arts majoring in Painting.
