Ivory has special significance for the peoples of East Nusa Tenggara as it is extremely rare. These bracelets were prized heirlooms which were passed down from generation to generation. Elephants have been extinct since pre-historic times in Eastern Indonesia. As such ivory would have traditionally been obtained by trade from Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula and Mainland Southeast Asia.
