‘A Ă Â…’ by Nguyen Huy An comprises the 29 alphabets of the Vietnamese language, Quốc ngữ, each isolated and presented in its own frame. These letters formerly existed as propaganda slogans that had been painted onto walls in villages across the north of Vietnam (not exclusively Hanoi). The artist extracted these letters by carefully slicing away the top layer of plaster that coated the wall. In doing so, he both reveals a cross section of the wall that it came from, and also leaves a hole where the letter used to be. This artwork, that saw the artist’s deliberate and somewhat invasive act of incising and extracting of wall surfaces that hosted the propaganda slogans of communist ideologies in the language created by the country’s past colonial rulers, is a richly complex work that carries the literal and metaphorical layers of the country’s history.
