This black kebaya is made using a checked fabric, and is used during mourning periods as somber colours of black, blue and green were considered appropriate for the occasion in the 20th century. The kebaya is a loose open jacket favoured by Peranakan women from the late 19th to mid 20th century, and was worn together with a batik sarong (tubular skirtcloth).
