Inspired by his travels to Europe, Type 0 Civilisation is Ruben Pang’s re-capturing of Peter Paul Rubens’ iconic work, The Fall of The Damned. With no pre-determined goal in mind, Pang’s brushstrokes are led by intuition, reflex, and accident. In the application and removal of paint, upon the aluminum composite panel, the colours of the work take on seemingly musical qualities of counterpoint and harmony. The work’s title references humanity’s present ability to harness energy in accordance to the expanded Kardashev scale, perhaps suggesting the unfettered thirst for power as one leading to ruin.
