The Tang Shipwreck was acquired through the generous donation of the Estate of Khoo Teck Puat.
This representation of a curly haired foreigner with deep-set eyes and a high-bridged nose is unique among the motifs on Changsha bowls. It could possibly attest to the presence of foreigners in the inland region of Changsha during the cosmopolitan Tang dynasty, or it was simply an expression of the artist’s imagination.
