R.B4.R., also known as Retribution Before Reincarnation, is one of Singapore artist Teo Eng Seng’s most powerful and iconic works. This work was inspired by the Haw Par Villa gardens in the western part of Singapore. Haw Par Villa is a Chinese mythological theme park in Singapore depicting scenes from Chinese folklore and history. One of its main attractions is the Chinese concept of the 18 levels of hell, which forms the inspiration for this work. Each piece of the work is based on a torture weapon used in hell. R.B4.R.is comprises disused petroleum plastic bottles shaped into the various weapons, and deals with the issue of environmental consciousness. This work was originally conceived by the artist as part of a performance display, but which was never fulfilled. When making the work, Teo had considered fellow Singapore artist Lee Wen as a possible candidate as the performer. This work was included in the 1st exhibition by Takashimaya Gallery, Singapore as part of a group show of Strategies: An Exhibition of Artworks by 7 Outstanding Contemporary Singapore Artists.
