Augusta de Wit was a Dutch writer and journalist born in Sumatra in 1864 and who contributed her travel writing to the Straits Times in Singapore. The first edition of this book, which compiles her pieces for the Straits Times, was published by the Straits Times Press. This issue, published by Chapman and Hall, adds about 160 photographs reproduced from the collections of the Leyden Ethnographical Museum and the Haarlem Colonial Museum. This book details de Wit's accounts of Javanese life, as well as a description of the famous Buitenzorg botanical gardens.
