The festival of Basant Panchmi, the fifth day of spring, has special significance to the Sikh faith as it was used to promote religious harmony by Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh faith. This painting is a rare rendition of the Ten Sikh Gurus celebrating this festival. The Gurus are seen accompanied by musicians, all dressed in vibrant yellow robes and turbans, reflecting the colours of the season. Seated in the centre, on a raised platform is Guru Nanak. The gouache technique of painting is accentuated with gold on paper.
