This textile is made using the tie-dye resist technique, known as 'bandhani', or more popularly called 'ikat', in Southeast Asia. In Rajasthan it is known as 'bandhana' or 'bandhej', where different designs are produced by tying individual parts of the fabric before dyeing. The word comes from bandha, bandhana, the Sanskrit word for tying. The finished product is known as 'chunari' (and in Gujarat as 'chundadi' or 'chundali') and refers to any fabric with a dotted pattern in light or red colours. While this type of patterning can be found on many kinds of textiles, it is most often found in saris or odhani fabrics also known as 'dupatta' (multi-purpose shawl or shoulder cloths).
