Eko Nugroho believes that art must communicate with people, and sees his work as "a storytelling journey”. His visual language is bold and accessible, and draws on his familiarity with traditional wayang kulit puppets and characters, as well as the cartoons and comic books that populated his childhood. Working with thick dark outlines, Nugroho's signature style and imagery reflect Indonesia's media-rich and politically charged environment. He responds to social and political situations with biting humour, sarcasm and parody. His part man-part machine characters are often accompanied by bizarre, ironic and oftentimes provocative statements in thought balloons or speech bubbles. In this embroidery work, the artist lampoons the motions that political candidates go through while campaigning for presidency, revealing their promises and thought processes to be farcical. The artwork is meant to be installed with a pile of gold coins on the floor below it, on the one hand serving as a visual parallel with the gold tones of the embroidery, and on the other, indicating the large sums of money expensed during political campaigns and also suggesting corruption.
