A Mandarin was an educated public official belonging to one of the ranks of the upper civil service in Imperial China. Mandarins were recruited through their successful completion of the Confucianist examination syllabus. However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many overseas Chinese leaders bought these official titles from the Manchu government in order to improve their social status.
